Choose the water temperature

Cold works for most loads.

4 min read

Today's detergents clean well in cold water, and cold water is gentler on colors and uses less energy.

A simple guide

  • Cold: most everyday clothes, darks, bright colors and delicates
  • Warm: moderately dirty clothes and synthetics, if the label allows
  • Hot: towels, bedding and heavily soiled whites, if the label allows
  • Never go above the temperature on the care label

ENERGY STAR estimates that about 90 percent of the energy a washer uses goes to heating water. Fresh Nest Daily isn't paid by any detergent or appliance brand.
